Alan Kightlinger

Distinguished Service recipient 2008.
Alan Kightlinger started his long career as a volunteer with the Douglas County Engine Company in Minden, Nevada, in 1972. He later was hired by the Nevada Division of Forestry and worked for that agency from 1974 to 1997, a period of 23 years, before assuming his employment with the City of Elko, first as a deputy fire chief and then as the fire chief.

Alan’s list of accomplishments, both individual and organizational, are many. Alan served as the executive director and president of the Nevada State Firefighter’s Association, served as state director of the National Volunteer Fire Council, participated on several standard writing committees of the National Fire Protection Association, and served as a member of a national incident management Type I Team.

Alan also distinguished himself over the years as one who supported and provided testimony to legislation that has been beneficial to ALL Nevada firefighters. Alan’s unselfish desire to ensure and strive for only the most beneficial fire service legislation was a hallmark of his commitment to the profession and in many cases to the safety of all firefighters.
