Earnest R. Tippin, a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps’ fire crew, died on July 28, 1939, while fighting a range fire near Rock Creak in northern Humboldt County. Earnest, assigned to lead half of the crew fighting the blaze, and four other crew members lost their lives in a canyon when the wind shifted and they were trapped by the flames. Tippin had two brothers in Winnemucca who accompanied his body back to Osewgo, Kansas.
