George Harris, 51, a member of the Virginia City Volunteer Fire Department, died July 30, 1935, in a fire at the Comstock. George, prominent Comstock resident and owner of the Virginia City Garage, was overtaken by the fire as it raged up the hillside three miles from Virginia City. He had driven his truck out to the blaze. When the wind changed, he was trying to make it back to the vehicle when he was overcome by the flames.
George was born in Gold Hill 1884 and had spent all his life on the Comstock attending school there and later working as a mechanic. He was survived by his wife, Margaret; son, Glenn, mother, Jeanette; and five sisters and two brothers.
