George J. Kennedy

George J Kennedy, 22, of New York City and a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps’ fire crew, died on July 28, 1939, while fighting a range fire near Rock Creak in northern Humboldt County. George and four other crew members lost their lives in a canyon when the wind shifted and they were trapped by the flames. Before his death he had apparently broken his right ankle in an attempt to leap across a 15-foot gully. Those who found his body surmised that he had lain on the ground for several minutes watching the flames creeping upon him.
