Robert Marsh

Captain Bob Marsh of the Cal-Nev-Ari Volunteer Fire Department did not let retirement or his 78 years hold him back from serving his community. Squad 1-84 was supposed to be a four-member squad. However, Bob served as captain, engineer, firefighter, and CPR-certified first responder, keeping the squad at his home and close to the highway that often needed a quick response for someone in need.

On October 14, 2001, Bob responded to a report of a traffic accident on U.S. Highway 95 just across the California border. Other units from the 18-member department followed seven minutes behind. But when they caught up with Rescue 1-84, they found Bob had died of a heart attack during his response. He had been a member of the department for nine and a half years. His was the first on-duty death in Clark County in more than 25 years, and the first volunteer death among the Clark County Fire Department’s 13 volunteer deaths.
