Stanley Rhoads

Stanley M. Rhoads 48, of Elko, a Barrick Goldstrike Mine employee was killed April 11, 1994, fighting a mill refinery fire that caused extensive damage to the gold recovery room. Stanley was on the mine’s emergency response team that fought the blaze and he was found inside the refinery. Stanley was born January 2, 1946, in Chewelah, Washington. He was raised and attended school in Springdale, Washington. He was an enrolled member of the Spokane Tribe of Indians. He came to Elko in 1992 and began work at Barrick Goldstrike Mine as an autoclave operator.

He married Mary Williamson, who survived him, on May 7, 1973, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He was also survived by sons John and Bear Rhoads of Elko; stepsons James Cowen of Wenatchee, Byron Cowen of Phoenix, and Allen Biddle; brothers Richard Rhoads of Everett and Gordon Rhoads of Spokane; and sister Gladys Granlund of Elko.
