Walter James, a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps’ fire crew, died on July 28, 1939, while fighting a range fire near Rock Creak in northern Humboldt County. Walter and four other crew members lost their lives in a canyon when the wind shifted and they were trapped by the flames.
